Explore Nantucket’s Avian Wonders: Join Ginger Andrews for a Guided Bird Walk

by | Apr 25, 2025

Spring brings a unique opportunity for bird enthusiasts and nature lovers as Nantucket prepares to host a special guided bird walk during the iconic Daffodil Weekend. Local bird expert and Inquirer and Mirror columnist Ginger Andrews will lead participants through the island’s diverse avian habitats on Saturday, April 26, 2025. The two-hour excursion promises an exploration of Nantucket’s feathered residents and migratory visitors that make the island their temporary or permanent home.

“Nantucket’s position out at sea creates a truly remarkable environment for birding,” explains Andrews, who has been documenting the island’s bird populations for years. “We have this wonderful convergence of species you might not see together on the mainland.” The event, organized by the Maria Mitchell Association, is designed to highlight the ecological importance of Nantucket’s various habitats while providing an educational and entertaining experience for participants of all experience levels.

The guided bird walk will showcase why Nantucket has become a notable destination for bird-watching enthusiasts. Andrews brings her signature dry humor and extensive knowledge to create an engaging experience that goes beyond simply identifying birds. Participants will learn about the island’s natural history, migration patterns, and the surprising variety of species that can be spotted during late April, a prime time for spring migration activity.

In addition to regular residents, the walk may yield sightings of seasonal visitors passing through on their northward journey. “What makes these walks so exciting is the element of surprise,” notes Andrews. “Even after years of birding on Nantucket, I’m still amazed by unexpected rarities that appear. Every walk offers something new.” The event has become a popular tradition during Daffodil Weekend, offering a nature-focused alternative amid the festival’s many activities.

The Nantucket Bird Walk will begin at the Maria Mitchell Association’s 33 Washington Street location. Participants should gather on the lawn at 7:45 AM for the 8:00 AM departure. The walk will wrap up at 10:00 AM, allowing plenty of time to enjoy other Daffodil Weekend festivities. The $20 per person fee helps support the Maria Mitchell Association’s ongoing conservation and education efforts on the island. The organizers recommend wearing comfortable, sensible shoes and dressing appropriately for the day’s weather conditions.

Birding equipment will be available for those who need it. “We have loaner binoculars for participants who don’t have their own,” a spokesperson for the event mentioned. “No experience is necessary, as Ginger is wonderful at accommodating both beginners and experienced birders.” The event welcomes children aged 8 and older when accompanied by an adult guardian, making it a potential family activity. In case of inclement weather, the walk will be canceled, and participants will be offered tickets for an alternative date.

Pre-registration is strongly encouraged as the bird walk typically reaches capacity quickly. Interested participants can register online through the Maria Mitchell Association’s website by clicking the “REGISTER” button on the event page. While walk-ins will be accommodated if space permits, securing a spot in advance is the best way to guarantee participation in this popular event.
