The local community, Island Variety, has carved out a niche for itself as a cornerstone of the neighborhood’s daily life since opening its doors in January 2000. Established at 5 Freedom Square by initiators Toni Struncis and Veronica Bartley, Island Variety quickly blossomed into much more than just a store; it became a gathering place for locals, a provider of essential and unique goods, and a symbol of the tight-knit community it served. The early days of Island Variety were marked by the dedicated leadership of Toni and Veronica, who together built a business that was as much about fostering community relations as it was about commerce.

As the years progressed, so did the store’s reputation and role within the community. The original location at Freedom Square was a buzzing hub of activity, ingraining itself into the fabric of daily life for the island’s residents. Through the dedication of its founders and the loyalty of its customers, Island Variety became synonymous with the warmth and hospitality that the island is known for. It wasn’t just the products on the shelves that made the store a success, but the relationships and trust built between the staff and the community. This period set a strong foundation for the store, one that would carry it through changes and challenges in the years to come.

The evolution of Island Variety took a significant leap in 2018 when it relocated its operations to 59 Old South Road, marking a new chapter in its storied existence. This move was not just a change of address; it represented a fresh start in a new space, providing the opportunity to serve a broader segment of the community. Despite the change in scenery, the heart and soul of Island Variety remained unchanged, continuing to fulfill its mission of being a vibrant, year-round business deeply rooted in and valued by the community it serves.

In May of 2023, a pivotal moment arrived for Island Variety with the transition of ownership to Scott and Erin Carson. After many years of dedication, Toni Struncis left the island, passing the torch to the Carsons, who eagerly accepted the responsibility to carry on the legacy of Toni and Veronica. Scott and Erin are deeply committed to preserving the spirit and the traditions of Island Variety, underpinned by a strong sense of gratitude for the island-wide support they have received. This new chapter in the story of Island Variety promises to uphold the values established by its founders while looking forward to future possibilities, ensuring that the store continues to be a beloved fixture of the community for years to come.

Over the past 23 years, Island Variety has not just witnessed the passage of time but has grown and adapted with its community, enduring as a beacon of continuity and comfort. From its humble beginnings at Freedom Square to its current home on Old South Road and through transitions in leadership, the store has never wavered in its commitment to serving and supporting the local populace. As Island Variety prepares to navigate the future under the guidance of Scott and Erin Carson, it does so with the full backing of a community that has come to see the store as an essential part of its collective identity, a legacy continued.
